Maximum Range

The range of your two-way radio is an important consideration when buying radios. Commonly referred to as the “line of sight” rule, this refers to the maximum distance that you can expect your chosen set of radios to cover if operating in uncluttered areas free from obstructions. If purchasing a VHF radio, this maximum range will usually be less than if you’re buying a UHF radio.

VHF Radio vs. UHF Radio

UHF signals are shorter in length, and they have a slightly wider wave. This allows them to carry more data further, resulting in increased range for UHF radios when compared to VHF units. Distances of up to 5 miles (8 kilometers) are achievable with these sets, and they can also be expected to function well in heavily forested and hilly areas.

VHF signals, on the other hand, are typically longer and skinnier than UHF ones. This means that VHF frequencies suffer more from obstruction by natural or manmade structures such as dense forests or hills. A full mile (1.6 kilometers) is a more realistic range with these radios, while some will manage half of that.

Number Of Radios

While most people tend to think of two-way radios as a pair for voice communication between two users, this isn’t the only way that they can be used. One of the biggest advantages to using two-way radios is the ability to talk to a whole team at once. Consider how many people you’ll need to have connected and take that into account when making your purchase.

Battery Type

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, each set of two-way radios that you buy will require a different battery type. To make sure that this is fully compatible with your chosen sets and to avoid making a mistake with your order, it’s vital that you check what kind of battery each requires before buying.
